The Concept and Characteristics of Patients Cohort Study
Bae Jong-Myon

Abstract
According to activation of clinical epidemiologic studies using secondary data sources, the word of patients cohort study (PCS) is emerging. Because of sharing the concept of cohort, PCS may be confused with the traditional cohort study (TCS). In addition, PCS may be mixed up with disease registry (DS) in point of patients¡¯ enrolment. To corroborate the concept and characteristics of patients cohort study, author tried to summarize the differences among PCS, TCS, and DS. The PCS obviously differentiates from TCS and DS in items of the constructing aim, entry criteria, information of exposure, statistics of outcome, targeting factors, and confounding control. To derive a correct result from secondary data sources, the concept and characteristics of PCS should be understood exactly.
